Cans For Kids, a charity registered in Cyprus in 1990, has been chosen by the international Energy Globe Foundation, based in Austria, as the 2011 winner for Cyprus.
The World Energy Globe Award for Sustainability was founded in 1999 by Wolfgang Neumann, an Austrian energy entrepreneur.
The award aims “to call widespread attention to innovation and leading practice in the use of energy and natural resources”. It is presented annually at national level in over 100 nations, and at international level. Conceived as the Oscar of energy saving, this environmental award annually distinguishes projects from all over the world that focus on energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources.
Award ceremonies have been conducted in Japan, Canada and Belgium, and will this year take place in Austria, this Friday, November 25.
“We are absolutely thrilled that Cans For Kids has been selected by the Energy Globe jury as the winner for Cyprus” said the charity’s Vice-President, Rosie Charalambous. “To get recognition for our work from such a prestigious organisation is, indeed, an honour, and one which we gratefully share with all our volunteers, who help us sort the cans for recycling so that we can donate medical equipment to the children’s wards at the Makarios Hospital”.
To date Cans For Kids has given the hospital equipment worth over €260,000.
