Three Cypriot cities, the capital Nicosia, Limassol on the southern coast and Pafos on the western coast, have submitted their candidacies for the title of the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2017.

Each one projects its particular characteristics, highlighting what makes them special: the capital Nicosia lies in the centre of the island, still a divided city cut in two by the Green Line which separates its northern Turkish occupied part from the southern government controlled part of the country. Limassol, on the southern coast, is known for its traditions and the reveling spirit of its people. Pafos, on the western coast, aspires to become an “open cultural venue” with a long history to show for.

Speaking to CNA the heads of the three projects analyze their proposals, giving the message that any city chosen will contribute to the promotion of Cyprus and its political problem from a purely artistic standpoint.

One Cypriot and one Danish city will be designated as European Capitals of Culture for 2017.
