Ankara’s Plan B for Cyprus is reportedly exerting efforts for the recognition of the breakaway regimeTurkish daily online Stargazete newspaper (16.11.11) reports that Ankara has prepared a Plan B in case the Cyprus problem is not solved before the first of July, the day that the Republic of Cyprus is taking over the term presidency of the European Union.
The paper writes that according to a Plan B, which is reflected in the Turkish Foreign Ministry’s budget, in case there is no solution, Turkey will take an initiative at the UN Security Council for lifting the “unjust” isolation of the Turkish Cypriots. If no result comes out from the January meeting between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides with the UN Secretary-General, Turkey will exert diplomatic pressure on the UN, the EU and other countries.
In order to revive the economy of the breakaway regime, Turkey will take action in the EU and exert efforts towards the lifting of the “unjust embargo” in the EU countries. The decision for the “direct trade regulation” with the Turkish Cypriots issued by the EU Commission after the 2004 referendum will be the base for this demand. Ankara will also convey the message that ‘The Turkish Cypriot people made everything possible for the solution. Now it is your turn’. Ankara will also start diplomatic campaign for the launching of direct flights to the breakaway regime.
The B Plan is interpreted as “pushing the button” for the recognition of the breakaway regime by the international community, writes the paper. However, diplomatic sources noted that the Plan B will be realized in case the negative scenario takes place and expressed the opinion that Turkey wants to keep its current position that a solution should be reached through with negotiations during which Turkey will be based on the principle that it is a step ahead regarding the solution.
