The UN is obliged to defend both the agreed process as well as the agreed basis for a solution to the Cyprus problem, Director of the Office of the President of the Republic Christos Christofides has said.
Addressing a ceremony for the burial of Ioannis Savvides, who died in a ambush by Turkish troops in 1974 and his remains were identified with the DNA identification process, Christofides warned that the toleration of attitudes that undermine the solution basis “is like giving the green light to Turkey to continue its unacceptable and illegal division of the island, since the ongoing talks cannot reach their aim for a solution to the Cyprus problem.“
“Our side is more than ready for a solution to the Cyprus problem but not any solution. We are not ready to accept a bad solution which would essentially constitute the closure of the Cyprus problem with negative consequences on the future of our people,“ Christofides went on to say.
He pointed out that Turkish provocation is clearly manifested with regard to Cyprus` exploratory drilling in its Exclusive Economic Zone.
