For the first time this season Barnet fans leaving Underhill on a Saturday evening were returning home after watching their side take three points.

They had seen a close contest against Aldershot Town but a strong second half performance from the Bees secured an important 2-1 victory.

The Shots had taken a first half lead when a long ball over the Barnet defence was not dealt with and Danny Hylton raced through to fire past Liam O’Brien.

A half time substitution made the difference as Steve Kabba replaced Mark Byrne and the striker made an impact as he was brought down for a penalty before scoring the resulting spot kick.

Barnet took the lead soon after when Ricky Holmes fired in from a tight angle to hand the Bees victory.

Lawrie Sanchez said after the game he was pleased with the effort his side produced to get back into the contest after a poor first half.

He said: “In the first half we were sluggish and I wasn’t very impressed. Their goal is too soft and it is starting to affect us now. You could see the passing went astray and we were all over the place.

“We made a change at half time, unfortunately Byrne has come off and we have brought on Kabba who looked bright and breezy up front.

“On the back of that their keeper has pulled off two fantastic saves and we could have got more.

“It was a matter of getting the first goal, we had one disallowed, but we finally got the ball in and then it was a case of getting the second one and winning the game which we did.”

It was another good attacking performance from Barnet who created many chances throughout the match.

In recent games the Bees have played well but have been left frustrated as late goals cost them results and points.

Sanchez said on the basis of the second half, it was finally a result that matched the performance.

He said: “We haven’t got what we have deserved from games but I believe, based on the second half display, we did today.

“In the six or seven minutes of injury time there was a shot that was deflected and tipped onto the bar by Liam (O’Brien) and it has come out to their centre-forward who misses the goal somehow.

“The three of us on the bench looked at each other and laughed because that is the type of thing that is happening at the moment.

“There is no reason for it. The ball could have gone anywhere but it has ricocheted into the air and Liam said he got a finer on it. But the fact the striker following up missed is the first bit of luck we have had.

“But in the end I thought we were worth the three points”
