President of the Republic Demetris Christofias is attending the European Council meeting, which takes place on Wednesday in Brussels.

During the meeting of the heads of state and government of the European Union member states discussion will focus on decisions pertaining to the future of the euro area, notably efforts to stop further deepening of the crisis and to stabilise the market situation as well as a new methodology for managing the common currency.

Under discussion at the meeting will be a package of measures in response to the crisis, including the recapitalisation of banks and the strengthening of the European Financial Stability Facility.

The Polish Presidency emphasises that the key issue is for decisions essential for the entire European economy to be made within the group of all the European Union states.

After the European Council meeting, a meeting of euro area states is planned, to discuss about the Greek debt crisis.
