WFL Challenge Cup Round 1 Sunday 9th October 2011

Bushey Rangers 0 – 7 Omonia Green U12s

The first of three weeks of Cup games, and after a tough opening to the season, finally the Greens have hit some great form. They travelled to Bushey Rangers and were in no mood for an upset today. The team lined up with Julek in goal, Gotch Right back, Mackenzie & Blake in the centre and Cameron on the left, the midfield of Jake, Luca, Samir, Nicholas and James supported Andreas.

Omonia went into early domination and after Andreas was felled on the right, James swung in the cross and Luca rose to head home 1 – 0. Goal two came soon after and it was James who scored with a delightful drive over the keepers head 2 – 0, and it was’nt long after when Samir’s long range effort sailed into the roof of the net for 3 – 0. Omonia could have gone further ahead when Luca just headed over from Jake’s cross. So half time was 3 – 0.

The second half saw more domination with Haris and Pasquale on, and it was James who was to score the fourth, the keeper could only parry a cross and James finished into the corner 4 – 0. James was on hand to score a 5th when Nicholas played the ball back to Haris who played a through ball to James, he raced free and scored low into the corner 5 – 0. Goal six came from Blake with a low drive from a flowing move for 6 – 0, then a neat move down the left from Cameron & Nicholas, Cameron swung in the cross and Andreas raced in to head toward goal but the Bushey keeper made a great save. Goal seven came from a move down the right Alex found Gotch who slid the ball through to Andreas who sqared for Pasquale to tap home for 7 – 0.

Well done to the Greens who on a difficult pitch full of bumps and undulations and really was only fit for grazing, played football on the floor and with neat passing movements.

Omonia Under U14s Green

Match Report

Finchley Revolution 4 Omonia Green 6

What a game!

The Greens travelled to the expensive neighbourhood of Golders Green for an away league clash with Finchley Revolution.

In the shadow of expensive mansions and on a beautifully prepared pitch, Omonia made an unbelievable start and were ahead within a minute.  A great link up on the right between Demetris and Nick P, sent the latter away and as he turned in towards goal he was felled from behind. Terry stepped up and put the greens ahead. Almost from the re-start, the greens should have extended the lead when Demetris again raiding down the right clipped in a beautiful ball which Nick P put over the bar.

That set the tone for the first 35 minutes and in truth the greens really dominated and should have been out of sight before the whistle blew. That said, they doubled their lead on 20 minutes when neat interplay on the left meant Luke swung in a cross which swirled away from the keeper and into the net. Further chances where created down both flanks with some near misses, good saves and some bad luck.

However as is often the case Finchley cut the deficit just before half time when a long range shot was touched onto the bar by Zac but he was beaten to the rebound.

You would have expected Finchley to have come out all guns blazing but the greens were on the front foot and extended their lead when Andrew picked out Nick P who ran onto goal, composed himself and passed the ball into the net.

However it wasn’t all one way traffic and the home side were getting more into the game and always looked dangerous on the break with their speedy forward line. What happened next seem to take a few seconds but within a short period of time Finchley had reduced the lead, equalised and then unbelievably went ahead at 4-3.

Given this dramatic change around in proceedings, it seemed difficult to see where a response would come from. However, this team does not panic, the boys believe in the way they play and we always have attackers who will score goals. Even as time ebbed away, the response was immediate. Will went close followed by a near miss from Nick P.

Another mazy run into the box from Will was halted illegally for a second spot kick. With the pressure on, Terry calmly converted to bring the scores level. As the match went into added time, was there enough time for a winner?

Incredibly and following a scramble in the home area, Will reacted quickly to hook the ball into an empty net to put Omonia 5-4 up.

With injury time being played, Omonia won a corner which Nick P delivered to the edge of the box, Luke stooped and found the top corner of the net with a fantastic header and the greens had won an incredible game 6-4 against a very dangerous and capable Finchley side.
