Former finance minister Michalis Sarris said on Friday that lack of evidence and medical examinations prove that he was not involved in any criminal action in occupied Nicosia.
Sarris was released late on Thursday from ‘custody’ after a week-long-detention on alleged sexual offences. He had posted some €46,000 in bail and ordered to appear again before a ‘court’ in the north on November 16.
“I’m puzzled and deeply saddened over the mysterious circumstances of my arrest, the over-zealous attempts to criminalize me and the presentation of malicious charges without any hesitation,” he also said.
The 65-year-old member of the President’s negotiating team at the UN-brokered peace talks is also a former World Bank director.
He is facing charges of conspiracy to commit a felony, indecent assault and sex against the order of nature.
The whole case appears to be a set-up as well as a fiasco for the Turkish Cypriot ‘police’ who had arrested Sarris without even presenting a warrant.
He was remanded in custody along with a 17-year-old Turk and the 29-year-old owner of the house in which they were arrested.
The Turkish Cypriot prosecution introduced to the case four new people – all minors who were visibly physically abused by police in an apparent bid to extract testimonies.  The minors had absolutely no connection to Sarris.
