Atromitos are in the unfamiliar position of being top of the Super League after Kostas Mitroglou fired the Athens side to a win over newcomer Panaitolikos on Saturday.

The Athenians won the game 2-1 and have nine points from five games. PAOK also has nine points but is due to play its fifth game on Sunday against champion Olympiakos.

Mitroglou, on loan from Olympiakos, proved to be Atromitos’s “fox in the box” as two sharp finishes from close range either side of halftime were enough to give coach Giorgos Donis his second win of the season.

Unbeaten Atromitos, who made it to the Greek Cup final last season, also has three draws. William Edjenguele pulled one back for Panaitilikos in the 58th minute.

In Saturday’s other game, OFI won the Cretan derby against Ergotelis 1-0. Mirnes Sisic scored the winning goal for the home side after 30 minutes.
