The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will hold Tuesday a new meeting in the framework of the UN-led Cyprus talks, aiming at reaching a solution of the Cyprus problem.

According to UN Secretary’s Special Representative in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim, the Cyprus talks will move today into a heightened phase during which the two leaders will discuss across the chapters.

She added that over the past fourteen meetings the leaders have covered all of the chapters, noting that “next week they will move into a heightened phase to discuss across the chapters”.

Cyprus was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded the island occupying 37% of its territory. UN led talks have been ongoing since 2008 between the leaders of the two communities with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
