Cyprus National Council Meeting

The National Council is scheduled to convene Friday afternoon, under the chair of President Demetris Christofias.

The National Council is the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the question of Cyprus and comprises leaders and representatives of the six parliamentary parties.

The session comes days before the meeting between President Christofias, the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York, concerning the comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem.

The New York meeting, scheduled for October 30 and 31, will be the forth meeting with the Secretary-General. The first took place in November 2010, followed by two more meetings, held in Geneva on January 26 and July 7 this year, during which both sides reaffirmed their commitment to finding a comprehensive solution as soon as possible, while in Geneva, on 26 January the sides agreed to intensify the negotiations.
