Every weekend the police arrest 150 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Alcohol has been the primary cause of fatal and serious accidents in Cyprus since 2007 with an alarming increase in the number of drivers under the influence of drugs or psychotropic substances, said Director of Traffic Police Dimitris Dimitriou, revealing figures for Cyprus for the DRUID European road safety programme. He revealed that one driver killed in an accident had a blood-alchohol level of 643mg and that a level of 450mg is considered fatal.
He said: “Fortunately, the driver was alone in the vehicle and did not collide with another vehicle.”
