As part of an official visit to London Mrs Androulla Vassiliou,  European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism,
Sport, Media and Youth visited Bowes Greek School and Youth Club on Saturday 8th October 2011.

Mrs Vassiliou was welcomed by the School committee, parents, teachers and students.  The head teacher, Maria Charalambous, in her speech stated that Greek schools in the UK provide a valuable link with Greece and Cyprus and help second and third generation Greek children to learn the Greek language and maintain their national and cultural identities.

Mrs Vassiliou thanked everyone for the warm welcome and hospitality and mentioned the importance of multilingualism and learning languages at an early age,  especially as Greek is one of the  23 official languages of the EU.

Mr Savvas Pavlides, the head of the Educational Mission of Cyprus also gave a short address as did the deputy chairman of OESEKA  Mr Andreas Kalisperas and the General Secretary of AKEL UK Mr Chrystodoulos Stylianou.

Students of the school presented a short programme of traditional Greek dancing  and songs.

Mrs Vassilliou then had the opportunity to speak to the School Committee and parents and discuss with them issues relating to the way greek community schools operate  and other related issues.
