UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon will be meeting with President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu in October, and believes that the latest developments do not contribute to creating the climate conductive to a Cyprus settlement.

The UN chief met on Sunday in New York with Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Stavros Lambrinides, who stated after the meeting that they discussed Turkey`s threats against Cyprus regarding explorations for hydrocarbons in Cyprus` exclusive economic zone.

They also discussed relations between Greece and Turkey, the Middle East question, the financial crisis, and differences between Greece and FYROM.

Lambrinides said they discussed concerns regarding the instability created by the developments, and that had the opportunity to brief the UN Secretary General on the latest Turkish threats against Cyprus and its rights to exploit the deposits in its exclusive economic zone.

He added that they also discussed Turkey`s intention to launch explorations in an area adjacent to a Greek shelf.

“The Secretary General expressed concern over the phenomena that cause instability and which could also hinder the very important discussions on the Cyprus problem,“ Lambrinides said.

To questions regarding Turkish moves in the area, Lambrinides said Greece has established its sovereign rights internationally and that it was wrong to militarise the discussion just because Turkey wishes to do so.

“Turkey has no arguments and that is why it usually resorts to tension,“ Lambrinides pointed out.
