Cyprus President Demetris Christofias during his address to the UN General Assembly tomorrow will refer to the Cyprus problem and the difficulties in the UN-backed talks due to the Turkish stance.

A government source told CNA that President Christofias will also refer to the Turkish threats as well as the dangerous policy followed by Ankara with regard Cyprus` natural gas exploration in its Exclusive Economic Zone.

Christofias is set to stress the illegal nature of the “agreement“ signed today between Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu for the delimitation of the continental shelf between Turkey and the occupying regime, as well the illegal declaration of a UDI in 1983.

The President`s address to the General Assembly is scheduled for 11:00 local time tomorrow.

On November 15, 1983, the Turkish Cypriot regime, in the island’s northern Turkish occupied areas, declared a UDI, which the UN has described as “legally invalid” and called on all states “to respect the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and non-alignment of the Republic of Cyprus.”

The UN Security Council also called on all states “not to recognise any Cypriot state other than the Republic of Cyprus”. Barring Turkey, no other state recognises the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
