Commuters face more misery today and Wednesday after workers on city buses, trolley buses and the Athens metro called a 48-hour strike in a continued protest against government reforms.

The Piraeus-Kifissia electric railway (ISAP), the tram and the suburban railway are to run as normal on Tuesday and taxis will be operating.

The situation will be worse on Wednesday when there will be no public transport at all and no taxis. Taxi drivers, who are protesting plans to open their sector to competition, are to walk off the job for 48 hours from 5 a.m. on Wednesday

Transport workers are also planning action for Friday with strikes expected on the metro, the national rail network, ISAP and the tram.

On Monday, Transport Minister Yiannis Reppas had appealed to workers to show some social conscience. “It is crucial that everyone show responsibility… and consider the good of the country and the sacrifices of citizens,” he said.
