State high school teachers – and perhaps their primary school counterparts – are set to stage an all-day work-stoppage on Tuesday in protest to anticipated austerity measures.

Primary and state kindergarten teachers will definitely be taking strike action on Tuesday although a final decision on its duration has yet to be taken.

On Thursday a union insider refused to rule out a full-day strike even though earlier announcements had placed the work stoppage for between 11am-1pm. The school day ends at 1.05pm at state primary schools and kindergartens.

Teachers belonging to high school teacher unions Oelmek and Oltek and primary school teacher unions Poed will congregate outside the Finance Ministry at 11am and then march onto the House of Representatives where the austerity package is scheduled for discussion.

This second austerity package is expected to delay payment of the Cost of Living Allowance (CoLA) over January to July 2012 for teachers and other public sector workers.
