The latest developments in the Cyprus problem, Cyprus-Israel relations, drilling in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone and regional concerns, have been discussed in a meeting Cyprus President Demetris Christofias held with the Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee David Harris and other Committee officials.
According to reliable source, the President briefed Committee members on the latest developments in Cyprus problem. They also discussed the latest developments after the decision of the Republic of Cyprus to begin exploratory drilling for natural gas and Turkey’s threats. They also discussed the Middle East problem and the efforts to find a solution.
The President met on Tuesday senior members of the editorial team of the Wall Street Journal and outlined his positions on the negotiations, the prospects for a solution and the negative stance of the Turkish side in the UN-led direct talks.
President Christofias participated in a high level meeting of the UN Secretary General on Libya. US President Barak Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan also participated in the meeting.
After that President Christofias met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Late on Tuesday afternoon he held a meeting with the President of Kazakhstan Abishevich Nazarbayev.
In the evening, President Christofias attended a dinner hosted by the President of the Cyprus Federation of America Panikos Papanikolaou. Archbishop Demetrios of America also attended the dinner.
On Monday evening, President Christofias attended a working dinner with the Executive Council of the Cyprus Federation of America. During the dinner, President Christofias briefed the members of the Council on the course of the direct negotiations in Cyprus and on the negative stance of the Turkish side. He also briefed them on the economy and the efforts of the Republic to exploit natural resources in its Exclusive Economic Zone.
On Wednesday, President Christofias will attend the opening of the UN General Assembly and listen to the speeches of the UN Secretary General, the President of Brazil and the President of USA. Later on, Christofias will meet Greece Foregn Minister Stavros Lamprinides.
