POLICE were forced to fire shots at the tyres to stop a car driven by a 73-year-old man on the wrong side of the motorway near Limassol. Notified by other motorists, officers caught up with the man near the Yermasoyia roundabout at around 11pm on Thursday night but despite the flashing lights and calls through the loudspeakers he appeared oblivious to what he was doing. Officers even managed to get close enough to tap on the driver’s window but again the man failed to realise what was going on. After 10 kilometres, and seeing they had no other choice – considering the dangers – officers were forced to shoot and puncture the rear tyres to force him to stop, police said. Police said they breathalysed the 73-year-old who was found to be under the legal limit. He was taken to the Polemidhia police station but he was not in a position to explain under what circumstances he had entered the wrong lane of the motorway. Police charged the man with reckless driving and have started procedures to have his license revoked. “We are immediately proceeding with the submission of a recommendation to suspend the 73-year-old’s driver’s licence to protect public safety,” police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos said.
