The Cyprus Karate Federation is aiming to win more than 15 medals at the Balkan Karate Championships for Children, Cadets, Juniors and Under 21, which will be held in Larnaca from September 23 to 25.
Chairman of the Cyprus Karate Federation Andreas Vassiliou told CNA in an interview that the aim of the Federation is to exceed the 15 medals it won last year, noting that competition is tough because the elite of the Balkans will be gathering in the coastal town of Larnaca, Cyprus.
Vassiliou said prospects for promoting Karate in Cyprus are positive, pointing out that Cyprus has made great progress, taking into consideration the 25 medals won at Balkan games over the past three years, as well as a Mediterranean medal last year and a pan-European medal this year.
In his interview, Vassiliou said around 11 countries will be participating in the games in Larnaca with about 500 athletes.
Cyprus will be taking part with about 100 athletes, who are training with Cypriot national coaches, he said, adding that they have also attended a training camp with the Greek national team`s coach.
