Cyprus Police crackdown on illegal immigrants

A POLICE swoop in Dhali late Thursday night led to 12 arrests, 11 of them for entering the country illegally.

Police spokesman, Michalis Katsounotos said the twelfth person arrested is suspected of being involved in at least three break-ins.

Katsounotos said that the aim of the operation was to prevent and combat illegal immigration, crimes against property, juvenile delinquency, as well as conducting checks on clubs and drivers.

During patrols in the area police recorded 15 driving violations. Six of these were for bikers not wearing a helmet, four were for driving without a licence, another four were for driving without insurance and one was for driving without licence plates. They also seized two motorcycles without licence plates.

In addition three people were caught smoking in a club with four violations concerning the sale of alcoholic drinks.

Police also issued warrants to search 11 houses, 27 suspicious vehicles and 34 people. 

Checks were also carried out in 11 clubs, three kiosks and six betting shops.

The operation covered Dhali municipality, Lythrodontas, Lymbia, Pera Horio, Ayia Varvara and Alambra.
