A CUPCAKE baker from Southgate has been recognised for making one of the best-tasting cakes in the country. Helena Costa, who runs the House of Cakes shop in High Street, was a finalist in the National Cupcake Championships after her roasted almond flavour recipe won plaudits from judges. Mrs Costa, who was nominated in the ‘best tasting’ and ‘best decorated’ categories, said: “I’ve been making cakes for 25 years so to get this is just unbelievable. “I mostly make novelty cakes but when we opened the shop we thought we should offer cupcakes as well.” The awards are being held in conjunction with National Cupcake Week, which runs until Sunday and aims to highlight independent bakeries across the UK. Mrs Costa’s husband Dino said that the accolade had definitely provided a boost for the shop, which opened last year.
