According to police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos, a 71 year old Strovolos resident feeling overcharged, took exception to the price of cigarettes quoted to him by the 52-year-old owner – who also happened to be his neighbour.

Shortly after their disagreement, at around 5.30 pm, the 71 year old suspect fetched his shotgun, returned to the shop and shot the 52 year old shop owner in the head.

He was transferred to Nicosia general hospital by ambulance, where he received first aid and was examined by an ophthalmologist. He was later discharged.

In the mean time, Nicosia police arrested the 71 year old suspect, charged him with attempted murder and remanded him in custody for eight days.

The suspect reportedly gave up his shotgun willingly.

“This was an isolated incident” said Katsounotos.
