Minister of the Interior Neoklis Sylikiotis has called on citizens and local authorities to be vigilant and report negligent or malicious acts which may cause a fire.

Sylikiotis was speaking after a meeting he had on the matter at the Ministry of Interior with Ministers of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Sofoklis Aletraris and Justice and Public Order Loucas Louca, attended also by representatives of the Fire Service, Civil Defence, Forestry Department, Cyprus Wildlife Service and the Police.

In view of the upcoming long holiday weekend, he said “citizens and local authorities should be vigilant, more responsible and report negligent or malicious incidents”, noting that everybody is well aware of the devastation caused by fires.

“It is our duty to protect both the environment and private property“, he said, adding that so far there have been no big fires.
