T/Cypriot applies for Mari Property where Blast power station is built

A Turkish Cypriot applies to the ECHR for property in Mari which allegedly belongs to himTurkish Cypriot daily Kibris (23.08.11) reports that Turkish Cypriot Erdogan Atakan has applied to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) claiming his property in the government-controlled area of Cyprus. According to the paper, Atakan claims to be the owner of the land in Mari, where the Vassiliko power station is constructed and where a blast was experienced in July.

Speaking to the paper, Atakan stated that the house and vineyard located there had been destroyed in order for the power station to be built. As he said, after many initiatives towards the Republic of Cyprus without receiving a positive response, he applied to the ECHR. Atakan added that the Court accepted his application and began its examination. He said that he believes that his legal struggle will be concluded successfully and that he will take the proper compensation. Atakan, inter alia, alleged that the Government of the Republic of Cyprus expropriated the land in order to build the power station without giving him anything in exchange.
