Major blaze in Cyprus

A fire that broke out near the communities of Ayios Thomas and Anogyra in Limassol District on Saturday was placed under control only in the early hours of Monday, after having destroyed 8 square km of  carob trees, almond trees and wild vegetation.
According to preliminary estimates, the fire started at the Ayios Thomas rubbish dump and due to strong winds it spread rapidly and was raging out of control until about 11 p.m. on Sunday, when the winds subsided. Fire fighting helicopters joined the effort with the break of daylight to eliminate any threat of rekindling.
Anogyra relies on its carob plantations for the production of pastelli, a confectionary made of carob pulp. Large part of its population are British expatriates.
