All 18 Cypriot nationals in Libya are well and according to the Foreign Ministry, no worrisome development has been reported so far, following the seizure of the capital, Tripoli, by rebel forces.

Moreover, according to the information available to the Foreign Ministry, fighting continued this morning in the center of the Libyan capital.

Speaking to CNA, Director of the Schengen, Consular Affairs and Crisis Management Division of the Foreign Ministry, Andreas Zenonos said that all Cypriot nationals are well, safe and face no problems for the time being.

He added that both the Consul, who is on spot, as well as the Ambassador of the Republic, currently in Cyprus, are in constant communication with all Cypriots, who, according to today’s count, number 18 individuals, with the majority residing in Tripoli.

Zenonos also noted that Cyprus’ representation in Libya has been constant, since the last February’s events began.

The Consul, he added, remained this morning in his residence, not being able to open the consular office, due to continuous fighting in the streets, in the centre of the capital.

The majority of Cypriot nationals, residing in Libya, were evacuated last February and March, since the start of armed clashes between the regime of Muammar Gaddafi and rebel forces.
