Adele’s ’21’ has become the first British album in 23 years to rack up 12 weeks at the top of the US albums chart.
The Tottenham soul singer equalled George Michael’s dozen weeks at the top of the Billboard 200, which he achieved in 1988 with his debut solo LP ‘Faith’.
She also became the first global artist since Santana to notch up 12 weeks at the summit of the rundown – the legendary guitarist managed the feat in 2000 with his ‘Supernatural’ album.
’21’ has now racked up 2.9 million sales in the US and hasn’t been absent from the Billboard Top Three since debuting at Number One 24 weeks ago. It became the biggest-selling digital album of all time in the country last month.

Adele’s record-breaking feats have not been confined to the US – in April she overtook Madonna and Bob Marley’s records for consecutive weeks spent at Number One in the UK albums chart.
’21’ has now spent a total of 18 weeks at the summit on this side of the Atlantic.
