About 1,000 Turkish Cypriots are expected to pass through the Limnitis checkpoint today on their way to the Kokkina enclave to celebrate the anniversary of the bombing of Cyprus by the Turkish Air Force in 1964.
More people are due to reach the enclave by sea from Kyrenia, escorted by small boats of the Turkish navy.
The Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglou was scheduled to arrive there by helicopter at 10am.
Andreas Karos, chairman of the Committee for the Opening of Checkpoints said the convoy of buses, 45 in all, started crossing Limnitis at 8.45am.
On August 8, 1964, Turkish Cypriot mutineers under the orders of the extremist terrorist TMT ogranisation and mainland Turkish officers launched a planned attack at the Tylleria region in an attempt to create a bridgehead for a Turkish invasion.
The operation failed despite heavy napalm bombing of the area by the Turkish Air Force, mainly of civilian targets in which many villagers were killed and property destroyed.
