Cypriot Soprano Julietta Demetriades has been awarded a medal and a certificate by the STAR Foundation, for her achievements in classical singing, during a ceremony at the House of Lords.
The STAR Foundation (Sociable, Trustworthy And Responsible) honours artists who have excelled in their careers and in charity activities.
Julietta Demetriades has performed widely in England, France, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt. She recently made her debut at the Konzerthaus in Berlin and the Gasteig in Munich.
Born in Cyprus, she began her musical studies at the Hellenic School of Music in Nicosia at the age of 5. After graduating from the School in both piano and singing, she received a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London, to study piano under Christopher Elton and Piers Lane and singing under Yvonne Minton. She graduated from there with a Masters’ Degree in Performance with the support of the Leventis Foundation. She subsequently continued her piano studies with Martino Tirimo and Benjamin Kaplan and her vocal studies with Laura Sarti. She is currently studying under Arlene Randazzo, former soloist of the New York City Opera and coached by Sandra Smith. In 2005 she received a Diploma in Opera Performance Studies from the Opera School of the University of London.
She has been the recipient of many prizes including the first prize at the Panhellenic Competition for young pianists in Athens and the English-Speaking Union annual scholarship to the Académie Ravel in France, as well as winning the Beethoven, Chamber and Contemporary Music Competitions of the RAM. Last year she was a finalist in the Nizzissima 2007 ‘Voce del Mediterraneo’ Folksong Radio Competition.
During the last five years she performed widely in England, France, Germany, Poland, Finland, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt. Venues in London include The Cochrane Theatre, The Questor’s Theatre, Conway Hall, St John’s Smith Square, Leighton House, St Martin-in-the-Fields, St James’s Piccadilly, the Hellenic Centre and the Polish Institute. Highlights of venues abroad include the Cairo Opera House, the Presidential Palace in Cyprus and the Cathedral in Helsinki. She also collaborated with orchestras such as the Cairo Symphony, the Lublin Philharmonic and the Cyprus State Chamber Orchestra and conductors such as Ayis Ioannides, Alkis Baltas, Maciej Zoltowski, Roland Melia and Piotr Wijatkowski.
Broadcasts include the Cyprus Radio and Television, Television France, Egyptian Television, Classic FM, Czech Radio and Radio Israel.
Her concert repertoire ranges from Italian, German, French, Spanish, English, Russian and American Art Songs to Arias from the principal Italian and French Operas. As an soloist of choral works she sangVivaldi’s Gloria, Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Gounod’s St Cecilia Mass and Britten’s Te Deum.
In opera, she appeared in London in the title role in Thomas’ Mignon, and in the roles of Fenena (Nabucco), Ottavia (L’Incoronazione di Poppea), Lucrezia (Lucrezia Borgia) and Eva (Die Meistersinger), Alceste (Alceste) and Elettra (Idomeneo).
