The Deputy Commander of the National Guard, the Republic’s armed forces, Lieutenant General Savvas Argyrou, has been dismissed.

Announcing the Cabinet decision to terminate Argyrou’s appointment, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said it is related to ongoing police investigations into the circumstances which led to the deadly blast at the Naval Base “Evaggelos Florakis”, near Limassol, on the 11th of July, 2011.

The Spokesman said the decision was taken for reasons of “public interest.”

Argyrou was responsible for the army’s camps, infrastructure and administration
