A 40-day memorial service was held Friday for the 13 people who lost their lives in the July 11 explosion at the Evangelos Florakis naval base.
It was taken by Archbishop Chrysostomos in the presence of Defence Minister Dimitris Eliades, the Chief of the National Guard, the Chief of Police, the commander of ELDYK and other officials of the Police and Navy.
Furious relatives of the dead wept and shouted criticism at those they believed responsible for the tragedy.
They were angry that the National Guard merely sent them letters confirming the deaths of their loved ones and asked why no one could have delivered the letters personally.
They also demanded that a new National Guard be created on proper foundations, saying that this would be a suitable memorial for the dead,
