The creation of a committee which will deal with the technical details of the fiscal consolidation of the Cyprus economy was decided on Monday, during a meeting between President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and political party leaders.

Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis participated in the meeting. In statements after the meeting at the Presidential Palace, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said that on Friday a new meeting will take place between the government and the parties to decide the measures which need to be taken for the benefit of the economy.

Stephanou said during today’s meeting there was “wide “consensus”. He also noted that discussions focused on the measures that have to be taken in order to put the Cyprus economy on the right track, adding that all parties outlined their views and presented their proposals on the matter with an aim to form a widely accepted package of measures.

Last week’s tragic events, at the Naval Base Evaggelos Florakis and its financial repercussions were also discussed. A blast at the base killed 13 persons and destroyed the main power plant on the island.
