President Demetris Christofias hopes that in view of next month’s meeting with the UN Secretary-General, reasonable proposals will be put forward in the coming month, to help make headway towards a political settlement in Cyprus prior to the meeting, the third between the UN chief and the leaders of the island’s two communities.

Receiving the credentials of the first Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Cyprus Walid Hasan, Christofias assured of his continuous good faith and of realistic and reasonable proposals on his part with a view to achieve further progress. “We hope that the same good faith will be demonstrated by Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots,“ he said.

“To achieve this, Turkey has to stop its theoretical declarations in favour of a solution and in support of the talks and demonstrate in deeds, not in mere words, its political will. Ankara has to implement its obligations vis-a-vis the Republic of Cyprus and the EU, including its obligation to actively support the efforts to achieve a solution,“ Christofias said
