Woodman Veterans 1 – 3 Dynamo Veterans

On 22nd May, a hot and sunny Sunday morning, the Dynamo team took on the Woodman at the Yermasoyia Municipal pitch, in Limassol.  The match is part of the Dynamo annual pilgrimage to Cyprus which started in 2003.

Despite giving away 10 years in age, and even more in weight, the Dynamo Vet’s were determined to make up for the defeat the last time both teams met.

In the opening period the game was even, with Woodman and Dynamo each going close on a couple of occasions.  Dynamo opened the scoring just before the mid-way mark with through ball from Nick Zimaras which Agi Demetriou latched on to before coolly finishing at the goalkeepers near post.  Two minutes after the water break the hosts equalised.  A mis-placed pass was intercepted by Petros who beat a couple of players before dispatching a shot from just inside the area to Thrassos’s left hand side.  The Woodman were on top at this stage and were unfortunate not to be ahead when a shot just clipped the outside of the post before going wide.  However dynamo came back strongly in the last 5 minutes of the half and could have led going in to the interval.  With the score at 1-1 the referee blew for half-time and everyone headed for the water bottles.

The first period of the second half proved decisive.  After 10 minutes Agi Demetriou made a run down the left hand side and pulled the ball back to Mario Koureas who finished from three yards (although later he would tell us it was at least 30 yards!).  Dynamo were now well on top and three minutes later a clumsy challenge on Chris Timotheou led to the referee pointing to the spot.  Marios Koureas stepped up and placed the ball firmly to the goalkeepers left and into the bottom corner.  The second period was played mainly in Dynamo’s half with Woodman coming close from a free kick which Thrasos did well to save.  However the defence, superbly marshalled by George Stavrou, comfortably held out until the final whistle.

The game was played in a great spirit and, as is customary the game was then re-lived over some souvlakia and a few bottles of Keo!

Dynamo Vets would like to thank Paul Paschali of PP Estates for organising the venue and referee, and to the all the players involved.
