President Christofias has expressed the wish that Cyprus will participate in the London Olympic Games as a reunited country, represented by a team of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot athletes.

“This is the main wish I would like to make and I want to tell you also that I will spare no effort in achieving this goal,” he said on Thursday evening at a reception hosted by British High Commissioner in Nicosia Matthew Kid.

”I believe this would be a blessing for our island, for all the Cypriots, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins,” he added.

The British High Commissioner announced a series of events planned ahead of the London Games of 2012, saying the main target of the events is to promote the Olympic spirit, the principles and values of the Olympic Games and to highlight events that are happening in Britain and the links between Britain and Cyprus.

”The UK is proud that next year London will be the host city for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and we are proud also of the buildings and arrangements that are starting to be realised to host the Games. We, in this High Commission, are proud because there will be a team from Cyprus and will be participating in the Games including athletes, who sport pages tell us, have good chances of winning medals”, he said.

With about 400 days to go until the Games open, Kidd added, the High Commission, in cooperation with the Cyprus Olympic Committee, is planning to organise various events to further develop bilateral ties and contact between the two countries.
