A 1985 House Decision provides for the procedure to be followed, said to CNA here today House Secretary General Socrates Socratous.
According to the Decision, once the candidatures are submitted, the MPs vote and if a candidate receives 50 + 1 of the votes of all present and voting MPs, then he or she is elected.
If no-one manages to secure 50 + 1 votes, then a second vote takes place in which the candidate who receives 2/5ths of the vote of all present and voting MPs is elected.
Should this procedure fail to elect the new House President, a third round of voting takes place in which the candidate who receives the majority of the votes of all present and voting MPs is elected.
Replying to questions, Socratous explained that there is no further procedure in place in case of a continuous stalemate, adding that in such a case the parliamentary parties will have to enter into a round of consultations in order to decide how to proceed.
