The police announced on Tuesday that they will be suggesting new measures to enforce the smoking ban in Cyprus more effectively .
Police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos said that since the beginning of 2010 the authorities have identified some problems with the smoking ban which have been included in a suggestions report sent to the relevant department of the Health Ministry.
“The ministry will be preparing a bill proposal for a law amendment that will be submitted to the House for review,” said Katsounotos.
He added that aside from enforcing smoking penalties the police were also trying to encourage an anti-smoking culture.
“We are taking a stage by stage approach to ensure that non-smokers rights are respected by the rest of society.”
World No Tobacco Day took place on Monday. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption across the globe.
