The EU proposal, which gives the mandate to the Presidency of the Council of the EU to conduct consultations on behalf of the EU for the adoption of a legally binding agreement on forests in Europe was at the focus of a meeting of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council held on Tuesday. Cyprus was represented by Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Demetris Eliades.

In his intervention, Eliades said Cyprus was in favour of negotiating and adopting a legally binding agreement on forests in Europe, noting that it will decisively contribute to the right management, protection and development of European forests.

He also stressed the need for political will to launch negotiations and enhance the EU prestige, adding that consensus will allow the EU to maintain its leading role in the framework of the ongoing dialogue for the future International Arrangement on Forests in our planet.
