POLICE YESTERDAY arrested two men in connection with a series of burglaries and thefts in the Nicosia and Larnaca districts and are looking for a third after the three were spotted by a member of the public burgling a house.

Alarm bells were raised yesterday when a member of the public spotted the three allegedly loading stolen goods into their vehicle next to houses in Anglisides village in the Larnaca district.

Traffic police later spotted the car on the road between the villages of Mosfiloti and Sia. However, the driver ignored police requests to stop, forcing police to give chase.

According to police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos, the three abandoned the car in the Mosfiloti area and ran away. Police caught up with two of them, leading to their arrest. The third managed to escape and is being sought.

According to state broadcaster CyBC, the three were seen emptying their pockets of jewellery allegedly stolen from Anglisides as they ran away from police through the fields.

Police believe the three are connected to a large number of burglaries and thefts in Nicosia and Larnaca. The force has information that the car they abandoned, which had fake registration plates, was spotted a number of times in both towns at various places were thefts and burglaries were reported. Police have been searching for the car since early May.

Katsounotos did not rule out the possibility that more people were involved in the ‘gang’ believed responsible for a number of burglaries.

The two men, both Iraqi Palestinians, will be brought before Nicosia district court today for a remand hearing.
