Alex Tofalides wins GOLD at the Junior World Cup in Modling, Austria”
The Junior World Cup in Modling Austria is one of the strongest competitions in the Junior Foil Fencing European circuit for fencers under the age of 20.
What was encouraging this year is that with 137 entries and with 8 British fencers, Great Britain managed to put 6 into the top 36 seeds. Alex Tofalides, 17 year old foil fencer at Salle Paul Club Camden,(first year Junior) put in an outstanding performance beating world ranked fencers Wlosek (Poland), Gatai (Hungary), Imboden (USA) and Kroeplin (Germany), one after another on his way to the final. They are ranked 7th, 8th, 10th and 2nd in the Junior World rankings respectively. In the final he fought his fellow 20 year old GB team mate Davis in an all enthralling duel winning 15-14.
The President of British Fencing, Keith Smith, said “This is a superb result by Alex Tofalides, 1st and James Davis, 2nd. Many congratulations to them both and also to their coach Maciej Wojtkowiak”.
Tofalides is now ranked 12th in the World. His next major tournament is representing GB in the World Championships in Jordan in April 2011 where he will be going for a podium place.
