Government Spokesperson Kyriacos Koushos has said that the United Nations has informed the Greek Cypriot side that the Turkish side has given the international organisation its minutes of a conversation that took place between Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkey`s Foreign Affairs Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, but said that the Greek Cypriot side has its own minutes.

The Turkish side alleges that during that conversation President Anastasiades referred to the possibility of a two state solution in Cyprus something that the Government has rejected.

Koushos was replying on Tuesday, during statements at the Presidential Palace, to a question in relation to the matter following a reference by President Anastasiades to the minutes of that conversation during an interview at Alpha television channel.

“What I know, is that we have kept our own minutes and I also know that the Turkish side has given its minutes to the United Nations and that we have been informed by them,” he said.

Asked whether the Government has received the minutes from the United Nations, he replied, “I do not know if we have received the minutes or if we have been informed of the minutes` content.”

“What I know with certainty is that we have our own minutes which prove what the President of the Republic has said, just as I know that the Turkish side has given its minutes to the United Nations and we have been informed from there,” he added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The UN Secretary-General invited all parties involved to attend an informal five-plus-one meeting on the Cyprus issue in Geneva, Switzerland, from 27 to 29 April 2021.
