The Central Committee of AKEL announces with deep sorrow the death of comrade Neophytos Nicolaou, a leading militant of the AKEL Branch of Britain and the Cypriot community movement in Britain, who passed away after weeks of fighting the coronavirus.
Neophytos Nicolaou, originally from the village of Erimi in Limassol, immigrated to Britain where he lived most of his life, a life that was associated with the struggles and activities of Cypriot immigrants in Britain, but also with the movement of Cypriots abroad.
Neophytos Nicolaou, an ideologically committed and conscious AKEL militant, has been at the forefront of the struggles of the People’s Movement of the Left for decades.
He had served as a member of the Central Committee of AKEL, held the post of Organizational Secretary of the AKEL Branch in Britain and General Manager of the weekly Cypriot community newspaper “Parikiaki”.
A highly regarded figure in the throughout the Cypriot community in Britain, Neophytos Nicolaou was General Secretary and a member of the Executive Committee of the National Federation of Cypriots in the United Kingdom.
He was also among those who worked to establish the Wine Festival in London.
AKEL bids farewell with immense respect to comrade Neophytos Nicolaou who honored the ranks of AKEL with his personality and ethos.
The Central Committee of AKEL expresses its sincere condolences to his wife Evoulla, his children, Egli and Alex, and his beloved ones.
