Residents have been enjoying their streets more during the current health emergency.

Islington Council is taking action to create people-friendly streets – to make it easier and safer to walk and cycle, with healthier and greener streets for all, and to support social distancing.
The council has listened to local people and is making improvements to make streets friendly for everyone, especially children, young people, and people who are vulnerable.
From this summer, the council will create people-friendly streets where it is easier to walk safely on pavements and paths, cycle as part of everyday life, use buggies or wheelchairs, and cross roads safely.
Today (Friday, 29th May) the council invites local people to have their say and help to make Islington’s streets more people-friendly.
A Commonplace webpage has been launched to give residents the chance to give their thoughts, ideas and suggestions on how to make streets safer, healthier, greener and more pleasant.
Cllr Rowena Champion, Islington’s executive member for environment and transport, said: “We are working to create people-friendly streets, where it is easier and safer to walk and cycle, and streets are better and more pleasant for all.
“Today we are asking local people, who know their own streets and neighbourhoods, to help create better, people-friendly streets.
“Nothing will ever be quite the same after the coronavirus crisis. We are acting now to make sure streets are people-friendly – without action, our streets will become unsafe, unhealthy, and worse than even before the crisis began.
“We have seen how the reduction in motor vehicle use in recent weeks has created greener, less polluted and more pleasant streets. It’s vital we build people-friendly streets for all.”
Work to create people-friendly streets will be carried out quickly and effectively, using inexpensive measures such as bollards and banned turns.
In recent weeks Islington Council has already brought in measures in response to the health emergency, including widening pavements on Liverpool Road, Essex Road and on Stroud Green Road, and supporting changes to Transport for London’s roads.
Temporary cycle lanes are set to be introduced across the borough, with more measures at key locations like shopping areas, transport hubs and schools to support social distancing.
People-friendly streets are part of the council’s vision for a safer, greener, healthier Islington that can achieve net zero carbon status by 2030.
