Parikiaki can confirm, that as of Wednesday 15th April 2020, after having contacted local hospitals, churches, the Turkish Cypriot media and community, funeral directors and from death announcements placed in our newspaper, that over 200 UK Cypriots have died from coronavirus, many have contracted the disease, and several are in hospital.
The fatalities include 120 UK Greek Cypriots, 65 UK Turkish Cypriots and one UK Maronite Cypriot, all from London.
Outside London, there were four from Birmingham, three from Weston-super-Mare, one from Derby, one from Lowestoft, one from Cambridge, one from Cheltenham, one from Liverpool, one from Luton and one from Southend.
We as a community are becoming very concerned that there is “emerging evidence” to suggest coronavirus is having a disproportionate impact on UK Cypriots. We make up 3 per cent of the population of London – if we are 300,000 out of 9 million, we account for almost 6 percent of all Covid-19 related deaths in the capital.
One way of looking at this, is that we have seen double the amount of deaths (186 in London) than we should have; statistically speaking, it should have been around 90 deaths, meaning 96 lives could have been saved if Government advice was followed correctly.
Cyprus, which has a population of a million, has recorded only 16 deaths.
The other fear we have is that it is Orthodox Easter this week and traditionally, we enjoy family gatherings. We urge our community to please respect yourselves, others and adhere to laws stating that these gatherings should be limited to those who live within the household, otherwise, we can expect an acceleration of coronavirus deaths, possibly even doubling the current figures.
Anyone who is not following the rules could be fined, and police have the power to disperse gatherings. You can report gatherings anonymously by contacting the police.
Global coronavirus cases approach 1,981,239m, 486,622 have recovered and the death toll nears 126,681.
The US has more than 126,061 deaths and the UK more than 12,107. 16 people have died in Cyprus and 102 in Greece. In Italy, 21,067 have lost their lives to the virus, and in Spain 18,579. China has recorded 3,345 deaths, France 15,748 and Turkey 1,403.
Again appears to inflate the number of how many CYPRIOTS are in UK. That it is not serving a lot of causes of the Cypriot community. There are statistical methods which conclude how many are the Cypriots.
Today 15/4/20 you state in the report ” We make up 3 percent of the population of London if we are 300k out of 9M we account for almost 6 percent of all Covid 19 related deaths in the capital.” and also your report on 12/4/20 “Only 14% of people in England and Wales are from ethnic minority backgrounds, according to the 2011 census.”
The right position or an objective overall view is to accept all the findings of the 2011 census and not what ever fit to our story.

Σε 68.682 ανέρχονται οι κάτοικοι της Αγγλίας και της Ουαλίας που αυτοπροσδιορίζονται ως αμιγούς ή μικτής/πολλαπλής κυπριακής εθνικής καταγωγής, σύμφωνα με τα επίσημα στοιχεία από την απογραφή πληθυσμού του 2011.
Από τους στατιστικούς πίνακες, οι οποίοι δημοσιοποιούνται σταδιακά από το αρμόδιο Γραφείο Εθνικών Στατιστικών, προκύπτει ότι 30.870 κάτοικοι δηλώνουν ελληνοκυπριακή καταγωγή, 19.057 τουρκοκυπριακή και 18.755 κυπριακή καταγωγή, χωρίς περαιτέρω εθνολογική διευκρίνιση.
Συνολικά στην Αγγλία ζουν 68.372 κάτοικοι κυπριακής καταγωγής, με τον αντίστοιχο αριθμό στην Ουαλία να είναι 310. Δεν υπάρχουν ακόμα συγκεντρωτικά στοιχεία για τη Σκωτία και η Βόρεια Ιρλανδία.
Ελληνικής εθνικής καταγωγής, αμιγούς ή μικτής/πολλαπλής, δηλώνουν 48.002 κάτοικοι της Αγγλίας και της Ουαλίας.
Υπάρχουν εξάλλου περισσότεροι από 1 εκατομμύριο κάτοικοι που δεν προσδιορίζουν επαρκώς την εθνική τους καταγωγή, δηλώνοντας απλώς «Μικτή ευρωπαϊκή» ή «Άλλη λευκή» ή «Άλλη ευρωπαϊκή», ενώ εκτιμάται ότι ακόμα και μεταξύ των 45 εκατομμυρίων που δηλώνουν Βρετανοί υπάρχουν μετανάστες νεότερων γενεών.
Συνολικά, 50.205 κάτοικοι της Αγγλίας και της Ουαλίας δηλώνουν ως κύρια γλώσσα τους την ελληνική. Οι περιοχές με την υψηλότερη συγκέντρωση ελληνόφωνου πληθυσμού είναι κατά σειρά οι δήμοι του Λονδίνου: Ένφιλντ, Χάρινγκεϊ, Γουέστμινστερ, Ίσλινγκτον και Κάμντεν.
Συνολικά ο πληθυσμός της Αγγλίας και της Ουαλίας ανέρχεται σε 56.075.912.
Οι κυριότερες αμιγείς εθνικές καταγωγές είναι η ινδική (περίπου 1,4 εκ.) η πακιστανική (περίπου 1,2 εκ.), η ιρλανδική (περίπου 530.000) και η πολωνική (περίπου 510.000). Πάνω από 1 εκατομμύριο αριθμούν όσοι έχουν αμιγή ή μικτή καταγωγή από την Καραϊβική.

Also a second information regarding how many Cypriots are abroad and especially in UK from a survey carried out in 2017 by Neofytos Loizides Director of Conflict Analysis Research Centre CARC at University of Kent and Charis Psaltis Associate Professor at Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου | University Of Cyprus and their team they conclude that the Cypriots at UK could be “around 79 thousand for Greek Cypriots and 29 thousand for Turkish Cypriots” (total of 108,000).
The census is a good starting point but definitely an understatement as not all people are willing to give their ethnic origin. I don’t know where the 300,000 comes from.There is no accurate way of finding the exact number but a reasonable guess would be somewhere between those two figures
If we are less than 300k in London then the situation regarding how the virus is affecting us is even worse than the numbers in the article. So which ever way you look at it we seem to have a genuine issue that requires discussion.
my husband is a grk.Cypriot living Germany, our son returned from Miland and then my husband began to show the corona symptoms ,I gave him some rosmary tea (2 teaspoons 1/2 hour to brew) after which he felt much better and was more or les ok again the next day. This definitely helps.
