Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire at a flat on Silver Street in Edmonton.

A member of the public noticed smoke coming from the roof and called the Brigade.

The fire started in the roof on the first floor and was partly damaged by the blaze. There were no working smoke alarms inside the property.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “There were no working smoke alarms in the property. Homes need multiple smoke alarms or you won’t be properly covered. Ideal spots for smoke alarms include rooms where you leave electrical equipment running like satellite boxes, computers or heaters; any room where you smoke, and anywhere you charge your mobile or laptop.”

The Brigade was called at 0025 and the fire was under control by 0227. Fire crews from Edmonton, Tottenham, Hornsey, Southgate, Leytonstone and Ilford fire stations attended the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police.
