A partnership set up to secure construction jobs, training and opportunities for local residents has been launched in Haringey.

The Haringey Construction Partnership will encourage development sites to support residents in finding stable and well-paid work, skills and training opportunities and strengthen the borough’s economy, in line with Haringey’s Community Wealth Building ambitions.

An open day will be held at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London on 30 September for residents to find out more about opportunities and register their interest.

The partnership brings Haringey Council, the Department for Work and Pensions (Jobcentre Plus), and The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) together with senior representatives from key developers in the borough.

At a launch event hosted at the Green Rooms in Wood Green, representatives pledged their commitment to the partnership and to helping “Haringey residents and local businesses to benefit from employment, training and business opportunities that new investment brings to the borough”.

Opened by the Leader of Haringey Council, Cllr Joseph Ejiofor, and supported by cabinet members from Regeneration, Economic Development and Housing, the Partnership demonstrates that ensuring the community benefit from local investment is one of the council’s main priorities.

Cllr Ejiofor said: “The council welcomes development partners who share our values, who put our residents first and are committed to delivering improvements beyond shiny new buildings. The launch of the Haringey Construction Partnership emphasised the commitment from the council and our partners to support local people to find good work, build lifelong skills and benefit first-hand from investment in our local area. We’re delighted to see such commitment and look forward to seeing local people building theirs and the local area’s future together.”

Virgil Officer, Mayor’s Construction Academy Coordinator at CONEL, added: “We at Conel are very proud and excited to be part of the Haringey Construction Partnership. This will be a great opportunity to work with local residents to promote and provide opportunities in the construction industry. We will support the initiative by providing training in building services, town planning and quantity surveying right through to trade specific construction skills by working in collaboration with the council and developmental partners. Local residents will be able to access and benefit from local investment in the construction industry and will be provided with trade specific skills for the future.”

Essential to the success of the partnership is the commitment from our development partners. Jonathan Carkeet, Director from Berkeley Square Developments, signed up to the pledge and said: “We are delighted to be part of the Haringey Construction Partnership. Berkeley Square Developments are committed to sustainable, high quality development within Haringey, alongside ensuring the local community benefit from arising opportunities. The HCP is a great initiative which enables us to connect to local people and build a strong construction network. We’re looking forward to working together with the partnership and the community.”

Work opportunities in the borough will be co-ordinated through the council’s employment and skills team Haringey Works.
