Over the next few days the damage caused by the fire in Limassol will be assessed by representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, according to the Minister, Costas Kadis.

Kadis visited the affected area on Tuesday and discussed with local authorities the ways in which the Ministry could support the communities.

He also visited Paphos, where another extensive fire had been placed under control before spreading to forests.

Meanwhile, a 49-year old man was remanded by the Limassol District Court for four days in relation to the fire that broke out on Monday between the villages Mallia and Pachna, in the Limassol District.

The suspect denied having anything to do with the fire and produced an alibi which is being investigated.

The fire, which is now under control, burned 2.2 square km of crops, fruit-bearing trees, vineyards and wild growth. Abandoned huts and electricity poles and wires were also destroyed.

Minister of Justice and Public Order Giorgos Savvides visited the area and referred to the efforts to place the fire under control, noting that the weather had so far been on the firefighters’ side
