Summer Beauty

With the summer at its best, you may find that you hair and nails are growing much faster – this will be due to the sunshine vitamin D. Ten minutes of sunshine a day is enough to have your natural dose of that essential vitamin. If you eat a healthy diet, or like that of a natural body builder, you may even find that that your hair and nail growth may be at an alarming rate that you cannot keep up with. Although this can be a bonus for having healthy tresses and strong nails, it can also be hard trying to keep up with any up keep and maintenance. You may find you need to have your hair cut far more frequently along with any re-growth hair colour application you have done. If you have a fringe or bangs as they are also known, make sure you get them cut quickly so you can actually visually see properly, beyond the hair.

If you have your nails with gel or acrylic overlay, you may need to get them done sooner than you would normally, so if usual maintenance is 3-4 weeks, it may be 2 weeks or even less. Unfortunately it will also be the same for any inconvenient or uncomfortable depilation or waxing on the body.

Your feet will be in need of a regular pedicure because the nails will grow fast and will need cutting quicker. As feet will be doing a lot more open sandal or barefoot walking, be it at home or on the beach, they will naturally produce extra hard skin for protection, to make walking more comfortable.

A little extra work is required in the summer to keep up with the glamour, but whether you have to go and get haircuts or nail overlays done, there are some things you can do yourself regularly or in between treatment bookings, so make it easier to keep under control and getting beyond an unsightly manner. Diabetics should not attempt to use any sharp tools etc on the skin. It should be left to a professional like that of a chiropodist for feet.

Epsom salts

Sanex shower gel or bath foam.

Hard skin remover foot heel shaver bladeĀ (optional)

Rasp (resembles a grater)

Hard skin file

Nail file

Clippers

Bowl to soak feet

Towels

  1. With all the correct tools at the ready, start by soaking the feet in comfortably hot water enriched with some Sanex wash as it will be at the correct skin PH level. Add some Epsom salts for relaxation, known for its magnesium mineral properties and for recovery, reducing pain and swelling.
  2. When the feet have softened in the water, using the shaver blade, carefully remove any extra hard skin on areas like that of the heel. Use in a gentle slide down motion along the grain of skin. Keep washing out the blade throughout to remove any skin. Do not over use or you will cut into skin. Save some work for the next tool.
  3. The rasp will do the remainder of the work. This is also used in a motion going along with the grain of skin. Once again, do not be over zealous in use of the rasp as skin can be ruptured.
  4. The foot file will smooth out any of the previous skin slicing and grating. You can use the foot file in a little more of a vigorous manner to eliminate the rough finish of the previous tools.
  5. Using the clippers or scissors, cut toenails straight across. Do not allow them to extend before the toe end point, to avoid hitting for safety.
  6. Next file away any sharp corners to avoid any in-growing toenails. File in one direction only and not in a see-saw motion to avoid damage to the natural nail.
  7. Finally apply some moisturising lotion and relax with those refreshed feet.

Happy feet!
