Saturday 15th June 2019 saw the Green Lanes Business Association present the return of the Palmers Green Shopping Carnival after a 3 year hiatus.

The Palmers Green Shopping Carnival was opened by Bambos Charalambous MP, Mayor of Enfield Kate Anolue, Enfield Young Mayor Okan Gurhan and Deputy Enfield Young Mayor Chistevie Ngoma. They welcomed the public to the event and spent much of the day mingling with people. The event was also attended by LBE Deputy Leader Ian Barnes, Cllr Mary Maguire, Cllr Maria Alexandrou, Cllr Derek Levy and the Enfield Carnival Queen.

The event was one of the best attended GLBA events in many years, there were people everywhere throughout the day enjoying what was on offer. There was a full programme for the day: Hazelwood School Choir, Enfield Blaze Cheerleaders, Hazelwood Greek School Dancers, Hornsey Ataturk Turkish Dancers, Ivaylo Lubopitko Bulgarian Dancers and Singing, Belly Dancing, Zumba, live Greek band, with DJ Akile (Fitness Vibez) being our compere for the day, providing music and keeping everyone dancing in between performances.

Further down Hazelwood Lane there was a huge trampoline for the kids, face painting, henna, Professor Gary Wilson’s Punch and Judy Show, slime making by Time for Change Kids, entertainment by Beth the Clown, Haringey Sea Cadets demonstrating skills, we were joined by a caricaturist, The Showman Circus presented their Circus Workshop where the kids were taught many different circus skills. In addition, there were many stalls – Candy Floss stall,  All Your Party Needs selling sweets and popcorn, Jaramillo Café selling coffee, a tombola, Anastasia Lodge & Autumn Gardens care Homes,  Essential NRG Holistic Therapies offering hand and foot massages, Dolcetto with their delicious Italian pastries, Souvlaki Pro selling kebabs, and The Cake Box London offering the best in Greek pastries.

The Treasure Hunt also made its return this year, Treasure Chests were placed in 15 shops along Green Lanes and Aldermans Hill. The first prize was a very generous Silver Package Gift Voucher worth over £300 donated by Venture Photography in Aldermans Hill, the runner up received a £50 gift voucher and sweets were given to the other 15 runners up! The GLBA thanks Venture Photography for their contribution and also to the under 12s who took part!

The atmosphere was vibrant, fun and positive. The aim was to remind people that there is still an active local high street and to bring people back out into Palmers Green – while the core entertainment was located at the top of Hazelwood Lane, there was a live band on the high street, as well as Enfield Blaze Cheerleaders doing their thing up Green Lanes, Bollywood stilt walkers, Spikey Will the stilt walker and two Dhol Drummers who spent the day going up and down the high street. The high street itself was very busy with people popping in and out of shops and enjoying the food and beverages in our local eateries!

Costas Georgiou the Chairman of the Green Lanes Business Association – for and on behalf of the Committee and Members – would like to thank EVERYONE who attended, those who came along and entertained, stallholders, committee members who helped out on the day and a special thank you to the helpers behind the scenes who are often the unsung heroes of events like these – the chairman owes them a BBQ! The GLBA is looking forward to their next event – details coming soon!
